If the meter box is outside the property ensure the Gas key to open the door is in a place where every one knows where to find it. If the meter is under the stairs etc, make sure there is clear access to it at all times.

Do Turn Off the gas supply at the meter.
Open doors and windows to get rid of the small of gas.
